Siberian Huskies - Rescues - History
Siberian Huskies originated in the Siberian Arctic. The Chuckhi, a northern people whose main means of living was hunting, bred a sled dog to help them handle the difficulties of surviving in a harsh climate with freezing temperatures. The ancestors of the Siberian Husky were used to pull sleds full of hunting tools and game. The dogs also helped to carry their possessions when changing a place of residence.
Sled dogs were very popular in Siberia and shared man's roof and foods. During the day, Siberian Huskies worked a great deal, whereas at night they warmed people's beds with their bodies. The dogs also made good playmates for children who were raised to respect the dog from an early age. History has left many drawings and legends to show what a great role sled dogs played in northern peoples' lives.
The first Siberian Huskies were brought to America at the beginning of the 20th century. A team of sled dogs from the north of Russia made a worthy adversary to dogs traditionally used by peoples of America. Siberian Huskies placed third in the "All-Alaska Sweepstakes" in 1909. This was a real sensation. Indeed, who could have thought that a new breed smaller in size and lighter in appearance than common sled dogs could display such great strength and endurance?
The breed spread quickly in the United States and Canada. Experienced mushers acknowledged the supreme qualities of the Siberian Husky and took to them at once. Moreover, Siberian Huskies earned a reputation of devoted dogs when they saved a town called Nome from diphtheria in 1925. A statue in Central Park commemorates their feat.
The AKC recognized the Siberian Husky in 1930. The Siberian Husky Club of America was established in 1938 to promote the breed and preserve its working qualities. The breed became popular in many countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, and others. Yet, popularization of the Siberian Husky started there some time later than in the United States, about the 1950s. Despite this fact, there are a great number of Siberian Huskies all over the world and the breed is among the most popular ones according to the AKC statistics.
