Siberian Huskies found in rescues may stem not only from a poor understanding of the breed's needs, but an inability to supply the dog with necessary conditions. Very often breeders who fail to test their stock for health before breeding contribute to the number of Siberian Huskies with health disorders, consequently increasing the number of abandoned dogs.
The Siberian husky breed is generally robust and does not have many inherited diseases. Maybe this very fact makes breeders careless about the health of their males and females and produce unsound litters. To educate breeders on the issue of possible health disorders in the Siberian husky and the importance of tests, clubs and rescues supply primary information on some common diseases, possible effects, and warn against breeding of affected dogs.
Siberian Huskies suffer from PRA, cataract, distichiasis, and other eye problems, glaucoma probably being the most severe. Glaucoma is very painful to dogs and may lead to blindness. Cataracts can also lead to a loss of vision and are caused by injuries or are the side effects of certain diseases. Yet, cataracts often occur in dogs with poor inheritance. Thus, affected dogs should be bred to avoid this problem.
In fact, Siberian Huskies should be tested not only for eye problems. Hip dysplasia is a problem for most canines. The OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) keeps record of affected dogs, which allows for following the dynamics by breed. According to the statistics, the percentage of diseased Siberian Huskies has diminished in the last few decades. This success can surely be attributed to the efforts of breeders and breed fanciers.
Keeping in mind the importance of breeding stock' health condition, both the breeder and the owner should follow some recommendations in the course of producing and purchasing Siberian Husky puppies. Puppies should come from tested parents and have all the papers written. This rule is regarded the basic one in helping diminish the number of abandoned Siberian Huskies.
