Sad as it may be, the growing popularity of the Siberian Husky has led to much interest in the breed on the part of people who are not ready to take the responsibility of owning a Siberian Husky. Thus, many dogs have been abandoned or abused because of misunderstanding of the breed's peculiarities and needs.

Siberian Huskies end up in rescues not only because their owners leave them. The breed is known for its curiosity and urge to explore surroundings or simply run about. Left off leash, such dogs can run away even from a loving home and make their owners feel sorry they have not kept the dog in a fenced yard.

Siberian Huskies have a double coat that makes them better suited for cool climates. In fact, the breed does not do well in hot weather and should always have access to fresh water. Water is an essential constituent of the Siberian Husky's ration. The dog is very energetic and spends most of the time playing and running about.

Generally, the Siberian Husky is easy to care for in terms of grooming and feeding. The dog is practically odor free and sheds once or twice a year. Shedding is coped with by the means of frequent brushing and washing.

Siberian Huskies are a good choice for families with older children. Both like to play and have virtually limitless need for being active. Yet, both need to be restricted when inside. A fenced yard about 6 feet high is suited better for vigorous play. It should be also kept in mind that Siberian Huskies are great diggers. This natural instinct cannot be eliminated in the breed and has to be faced.

Siberian Huskies need a lot of interaction with both the owner and other dogs. They are on easy terms with canines and do not terrorize other pets if raised together from an early age. Interaction helps Siberian Huskies to feel like pack dogs and in a certain way come back to their roots as sled dogs working side by side in a team.
